Hartmann’s zebra live on the savannah in Africa in very dry areas with little water, but they can sniff it out underground with their sensitive noses. They then dig down to reach it using their front hooves. As their diet in the wild is far from rich, their intake at the Zoo is carefully monitored and they are fed on pellets, hay, oats, carrots, cabbage and apples.
Every zebra has a unique pattern of stripes in exactly the same way that humans have fingerprints. The stripes also provide excellent camouflage if the zebra is standing under trees in order to hide from predators such as lions. Other threats to their survival in the wild include hunting or poaching for food or skins, and loss of habitat to domestic livestock.
Zebra can live for 25 to 30 years in the wild and can produce a foal almost yearly after a 12 month pregnancy. The foals are on their feet and able to run with the herd within a very short time as the plains can be very dangerous.
